The Ace of Spade

Kate Spade photographed in black and white image her handbag store in 2000 About a year ago I was mulling over a list of topics for M’habiller’s weekly post, when I came across a partially written piece I’d started about Kate Spade. For some unknown reason, it was a challenge to  put together a style perspective that justly embodied the wonderful whimsicality of her work. So I put it aside with the intention of revisiting it sometime in the near future. But with news of her passing a year later, I’m faced with that same challenge and i’m not the only one. Few can match her mastery over shape, color, and dimension.  Few can cleverly weave femininity and functionality marked by an ageless iconic style . And while most designer bags require a hefty investment, Kate Spade handbags are and have always been moderately priced by comparison. So in finalizing the thoughts I couldn’t convey when trying to write this a year ago, Kate Spade didn’t just design “cute purses” but created works of  art.  And much like Alexander Mcqueen and other artists who left us way too soon, her contribution to the fashion industry is immeasurable and has an left indelible mark of the Ace of Spade.

Rest in heavenly peace Kate.
